Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has revealed through a Right to Information (RTI) reply that 15 of the city’s traffic signals are currently non-functional, raising concerns about traffic management and road safety at key intersections.
The information was provided by the NMC’s Electrical Department in response to an RTI application filed by activist Abhay Kolarkar, seeking details on the city’s traffic signal infrastructure and Intelligent Integrated Traffic Management System (IITMS) between January 1, 2023 and April 30, 2026.

According to the reply, Nagpur has a total of 171 traffic signals installed across the city since the inception of the traffic signal network. Of these, 156 signals are operational, while 15 are presently out of order. The civic body has also furnished a separate annexure detailing the locations of the non-functional signals.
The RTI response further disclosed that some of these signals have remained non-operational for an extended period, affecting traffic regulation at important junctions. Details regarding the intersections equipped with the Intelligent Integrated Traffic Management System (IITMS) were also provided through a separate annexure.
The civic administration informed that a total of Rs 1,36,50,024 has been spent on the repair and maintenance of traffic signal systems over the last three years. The expenditure reflects the ongoing efforts to keep the city’s traffic management infrastructure functional amid growing vehicular pressure.
The RTI applicant had also sought information regarding the proposed expansion of the IITMS network, including the number of additional junctions to be covered and the funds sanctioned for the project. The NMC has provided the relevant details in the annexures attached to the reply.
The revelations have once again highlighted the importance of maintaining critical traffic infrastructure, particularly at a time when Nagpur is witnessing a steady rise in vehicle population and traffic congestion. Citizens and road safety activists have stressed the need for prompt repairs of defunct signals to ensure smoother traffic flow and reduce the risk of accidents at busy intersections.
