Nagpur News: The number of colleges under Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj (RTM) Nagpur University is increasing, but the quality of education has not managed to keep pace. The biggest reason behind this is that more than half these colleges do not have a principal. Out of 828 colleges 450 colleges are functioning without a formally assigned principal. The tough UGC norms to select principals are the biggest reason behind the current situation.

According to sources, a lot of academic and institutional work remains pending in the absence of a college principal. Colleges don’t function well. The academic results of colleges have been deteriorating and selection of permanent lecturers is also a big problem. The people who are handling additional charge of principal can’t take any decision promptly.

Babanrao Taiwade, Principal, Dhanvate National College said, “The Principal is an important administrative post. The University Grants Committee (UCG) has decided to select the principal for a period of only 5 years. This has created a lot of dispute. First of all, the selection itself is a long and tough process. One and half years are required for selection alone. After that, it takes at least two years to understand the work of a principal.  Moreover, there is no difference between the income of a lecturer and a principal here. After 5 years, a principal will be considered a lecturer again, because of which many lecturers don’t want to take up the post of principal.”
