Nagpur: In a major action against narcotics under Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal’s anti-drug initiative “Operation Thunder – Let’s Unite for a Drug-Free Society”, the Crime Branch Unit 5 arrested a 19-year-old youth for possessing a large quantity of ganja on Tuesday evening.
Around 6:15 pm on November 25, the Unit 5 team received specific intelligence that a man carrying a maroon trolley bag was travelling between Kadbi Square and Mominpura Square in Tehsil police station limits. Acting swiftly, the squad intercepted the suspect in front of Pahlwan Baba Dargah Gate.
During inquiry conducted in the presence of panch witnesses, the man identified himself as Mohammad Kaif Mohammad Jafar (19), resident of Lal Patthar, Ganjakhet Square, Mominpura, Nagpur. A search of his bag led to the recovery of 8 kg 78 g of green ganja, packed in four khaki-coloured plastic-taped packets.
Police seized the contraband along with the trolley bag and ₹200 cash, collectively valued at Rs 2,02,200. Preliminary interrogation revealed that the accused had procured the ganja with the help of his accomplice Anil Patel, a resident of Mominpada, Pirbazar, Raipur (Chhattisgarh), who is currently absconding. Kaif admitted he was carrying the narcotics for sale to earn personal profit.
A case has been registered at Tehsil Police Station under Sections 8(c), 20(b)(ii)(B), and 29 of the NDPS Act, and the accused has been arrested. Efforts are underway to trace the absconding accomplice, while further investigation continues.
The operation was carried out under the guidance of Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, Joint Commissioner Naveenchandra Reddy, Additional CP (Crime) Vasant Pardeshi, DCP (Detection) Rahul Makanikar, and ACP (Crime Branch) Abhijeet Patil, led by PI Sandeep Buwa and his Unit 5 team.
