Nagpur: In a landmark achievement for railway safety, the Electric Loco Shed at Ajni, under Central Railway’s Nagpur Division, has dispatched its first locomotive fitted with the indigenous Automatic Train Protection System (ATPS), ‘KAVACH’. The rollout marks a crucial leap in Indian Railways’ efforts to prevent accidents and enhance operational security.
The advanced Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), developed under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, is certified with the world’s highest safety rating, SIL-4. Locomotive WAG-9 No. 31104 is the first at Ajni to receive the upgrade, paving the way for the installation of KAVACH in 312 three-phase locomotives at the shed.
KAVACH strengthens safety by applying automatic brakes when another train is detected within a danger range, thus avoiding collisions. The technology also includes overspeed protection, real-time monitoring, cab-mounted signal display, automatic horn activation at level crossings, and an SOS command to stop trains instantly during emergencies.
Prior to dispatch, the locomotive underwent rigorous testing on a dedicated track inside the shed to validate communication between station and onboard systems.
With full deployment planned across all locomotives, Central Railway is moving towards a future of smart, secure, and accident-free railway operations—delivering safer travel for millions across the country.
