Nagpur: In a shocking incident that has raised serious concerns over law and order, a youth was allegedly dragged out of police custody and brutally assaulted in the presence of a police Beat Marshal in Pachpaoli police station limits of Nagpur. The accused not only obstructed a public servant from performing his duty but also allegedly manhandled the policeman and threatened him with dire consequences.
Pachpaoli Police have registered a case against nine persons under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation.
According to police, Nitin Subhash Raut, a Beat Marshal attached to Pachpaoli Police Station, was on patrol duty near Taj Hotel at Ashinagar Chowk around 10.15 pm on June 20 when he noticed a violent clash between two groups. He immediately intervened and began questioning those involved to restore order.
During the inquiry, Tausif alias Bablu Mohit Khan, Farhan alias Bunty Khan and their associates informed the officer that they were involved in a dispute with Rahul alias Golu Pradeep Gondane over an earlier altercation that had taken place on June 19. Raut reportedly advised both sides to avoid escalating the conflict and suggested that they lodge formal complaints at the police station.
As Rahul Gondane was being taken for further questioning, tensions flared again. Police alleged that the accused pushed and jostled Beat Marshal Raut, forcibly freed Rahul from police custody and launched another attack on him using wooden sticks.
The brazen assault, carried out in a public place despite the presence of a police officer, created panic in the area. When Raut attempted to rescue Rahul and stop the attack, the accused allegedly misbehaved with him and threatened him with serious consequences if he intervened.
Realizing that the situation was spiralling out of control, Raut immediately alerted the Police Control Room. Additional police personnel from Pachpaoli Police Station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.
Rahul Gondane and other injured persons were subsequently shifted to Mayo Hospital for medical treatment.
Based on the complaint, police have registered offences against Mujahid Khan alias Pintu, Arag Khan Tausif Khan, Farukh Sheikh, Farhan Firoz Khan, Aftab Khan Mujid Khan, Rahul Gondane, Abdul Anis alias Abdul Shafiq and others. They have been booked for assault, criminal intimidation, obstructing a public servant from discharging official duties and other relevant offences.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, as a youth was allegedly snatched from police custody and attacked in one of the city’s busy localities despite the presence of a police officer. Citizens have questioned how such an audacious act could take place in front of law enforcement personnel.
Locals said that had additional police forces not arrived promptly, the situation could have turned far more serious. Pachpaoli Police are conducting further investigations into the case.
