Nagpur/Mumbai: The recently concluded winter session of Maharashtra cabinet in Nagpur may have been into news for many reasons, but there is one thing you would really like to know. This session has led the entire cabinet to do some exercise, in literal terms. Before you deviate your focus to some issues like Maratha reservations, Vidarbha statehood, demonetisation or any other topic, let us tell you it is all about the personal fitness of the legislators.
Now soon all the MLAs and bureaucrats from the State will take to rigorous workout regime to lose some flab. This initiative was the result of medical check-ups of 55 MLAs and over 450 bureaucrats and other government staff during the state legislature’s winter session in Nagpur.
High rate of obesity and other weight-related complications were found among the state’s decision-makers. 53 of the 55 legislators, from across party lines, and over 170 babus were found to be obese.
Fadnavis, who himself lost 26 kilos earlier this year is keen to help others in the state machinery and power circles to get in shape. Pune-based bariatric surgeon Jayashree Todkar, who helped Fadnavis lose the weight has been roped in to help the others as well.
“If the state has to fight the problem of obesity, we should start from the government and set an example. We are also conducting awareness campaigns at government colleges. This includes surveys for patients, their relatives and employees working there,” said Girish Mahajan, minister for medical education, water resources and command area development.
