With tobacco use killing 60 lakh every year in India, Vidarbha doctors form VSHNO in city

Installation ceremony of Vidarbha Society for Head Neck Oncology (VSHNO) was held at Paithankar Hall of Indian Medical Association, Nagpur on May, 31, 2014 to mark World No Tobacco Day. Noted philanthropist and Rajya Sabha MP, Ajay Sancheti was the chief guest. Secretary and President of VSHNO Dr. R Ravi and Dr. Madan Kapre respectively, other members of VSHNO including surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists and medical students were present on the occasion.
“The tobacco epidemic kills nearly 60 lakh people each year. Tobacco use accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths globally. In India, tobacco-related cancers represent 42 percent of male and 18 percent of female in the age group of 30-69 years. Tobacco chewing/smoking predominantly causes head and neck diseases, both benign and cancerous. The problem of head and neck cancers is particularly vexing in Central India,” opined many speakers on the occasion.
President of VSHNO, Dr Madan Kapre, in his opening speech said that we all are witnessing deadly side-effects of tobacco use in the form of dreaded cancers and other chronic diseases and therefore the formation of VSHNO was needed. Dr. Madan Kapre thanked his fraternity for supporting this noble cause. Talking about the objective behind founding this organization, Dr. Madan Kapre said that the step is to provide a common platform for different specialty doctors to discuss and contribute equally towards the management of head and neck diseases, to do activities focused on public awareness programmes, continuing medical education (CME), lectures, conferences, surgical workshops, scientific deliberations and forums for discussion
Chief guest of the programme, Rajya Sabha MP Ajay Sancheti, in his speech first congratulated the team of VSHNO for this noble step to serve the humanity and also gave assurance that he will support this organization and their efforts at his level best.
Dr Vinay Hazare, Dean, Government Dental Medical College(GDMC) and Nana Samarth from RTO were felicitated on the occasion at the hands of MP Ajay Sancheti for their yeoman services rendered to the cause of prevention of tobacco related diseases. Secretary of VSHNO Dr. R. Ravi proposed a vote of thanks.
