When the law and order situation in Maharashtra is turning worse and crime graph climbing in stallion jump proportions, a disturbing fact has got revealed. The Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday told Legislative Assembly that 6,770 posts in the Police Department, ranging from Assistant Sub-Inspector to Additional DG rank are lying vacant in the State.

The process of filling the posts is on with direct recruitment and promotions, the Fadnavis said.

The Chief Minister, who is also holding the Home portfolio, admitted in a written reply in the Assembly that due to the shortage of personnel, the police force is facing tremendous burden to handle intelligence inputs, growing incidence of crime and security of women.

The crime scenario in Nagpur, the hometown of Chief Minister, has turned from bad to worse with murders, robberies, and other grave crimes taking place rather on daily basis. The most recent brutal murder of an electronic trader in busy Sitabuldi area is a sharp pointer to the crime situation the city is witnessing.

The BJP’s Vision Document, released by Chief Minister Fadnavis during the Assembly poll campaign, had promised crime-free Maharashtra once the party is elected to power. Fadnavis had said, “Safety and security and law and order are the subjects very near to hearts of citizens, and a State subject, too. A Government is responsible for safety and security of citizens and maintaining law and order situation. However, the crime rate in Maharashtra is growing and growing and would not come down until the Government is in hands of able rulers. The law and order situation is passing through the worst phase.,” said the Vision Maharashtra Document.

Quoting Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar as saying ““Law and order are the medicine of the politic body and when the politic body gets sick, medicine must be administered,” Fadnavis had declared that the BJP’s Vision Maharashtra has an effective medicine to improve law and order situation in the State in the form of various measures.

But the situation tells a different tale. Moreover, 6770 posts of policemen lying vacant makes the situation dreadful as far as citizens are concerned. The law and order needs to be maintained with heavy hand.
