Nagpur: The threat of Cyclone Motha may have subsided, but the spell of unseasonal rain it left behind has kept Maharashtra on edge. Now, with the monsoon finally making its exit, weather experts say the state can look forward to the long-awaited onset of winter in the second week of November.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system of low pressure over the Arabian Sea—which had caused widespread unseasonal rainfall across Maharashtra—is gradually weakening. As this system retreats, temperatures are expected to begin dropping, signaling the start of the winter season around November 6–8.
Lingering Heat and Farmers’ Distress
Despite October ending and November beginning, much of the state—including Nagpur—continued to experience unexpected rain and humidity instead of the crisp chill typical of this time of year. The fluctuating weather has frustrated citizens and hit farmers hard, with unseasonal downpours damaging crops across Vidarbha, Konkan, and parts of Central Maharashtra.
Over the past week, several districts—especially Sindhudurg, Sangli, and Solapur—witnessed light to moderate showers due to the combined effects of a low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea and a cyclone formation over the Bay of Bengal. Nagpur, too, saw a spell of heavy rainfall on Sunday, disrupting normal life for a few hours.
Relief on the Horizon
Meteorologists have now predicted that weather conditions will start to dry up after November 6, paving the way for colder mornings and nights. Once the clouds clear, temperatures are likely to drop significantly, marking the official arrival of winter across Maharashtra.
With festivals like Navratri and Diwali already behind and even the Tulsi Vivah ceremony completed, citizens are finally expected to feel the seasonal chill that’s been missing so far. Experts caution, however, that occasional light rain may still occur in parts of the state during November before the weather stabilizes completely.
In short, after weeks of confusion between heat, humidity, and untimely rain, Maharashtra can finally prepare for a genuine winter season.
