Nagpur: Nagpur is known for its hot temperatures but the weather this season is something unsual and has never been experienced in decades. From touching down to an all time lowest of 3.5 °C a month ago on December 29 to still fluctuating between 4 and 6 °C currently, cold has been hitting harsh this time in Nagpur. However as per the Met website, the coming days may bring up the temperature as Thursday’s minimum temperature stood at 9.2 °C. Regional Meterological Centre at Nagpur has predicted the temperature may rise up to 16°C by next week.

However the current cold wave condition is quite unusual in Nagpur as it is centrally located town and owing to its tropical weather it remains far being affected with the harsh weather patterns usually experienced in the northern part of India. Days remain warm with temperatures in higher 20s or sometime even touching the 30-degree mark. This, time however Nagpur observed very low minimums which is very unusual.

A close look at the temperature data reveals that out of 31 days in the month of January, nineteen days observed single-digit minimums. Normally however, the minimum temperatures for the month remain around the cumulative average of 13.1°C. Hence, this is a huge deviation from the usual course.

Digging out a reason for this- such weather conditions can only be driven by what’s happening up North. The northerly and northeasterly winds are the ones to be blamed.
