Nagpur: In a major action against illegal arms possession, the Nagpur Crime Branch Unit-02 arrested the nephew of notorious criminal Wasim Chira from the Nandanvan police station area and seized a country-made pistol along with two live cartridges from his possession.
Police said the total value of the seized weapon and ammunition is estimated at around Rs 52,000.
Acting on a tip-off, the Crime Branch team conducted a raid in the Hasanbagh area under the jurisdiction of Nandanvan Police Station. During the operation, the accused, identified as 19-year-old Amin alias Patel Salim Khan, was detained from his rented accommodation.
During the search operation, police recovered one country-made pistol and two live cartridges from the accused’s possession.
According to investigators, a case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Arms Act and the Maharashtra Police Act.
During interrogation, police allegedly discovered that Amin is the nephew of notorious criminal Wasim Chira, who is currently lodged in jail. Investigators suspect that the weapon may have been arranged through criminal links associated with the gangster.
Police sources also revealed that the accused already has a criminal background and has previously been booked in serious offences, including attempted murder.
After completing the seizure panchnama and legal formalities, the Crime Branch handed over the accused, seized weapon, and related documents to Nandanvan Police for further investigation.
Police are now probing whether the weapon was intended for use in any planned criminal activity and are also investigating possible links to other members of organised crime networks operating in the city.
