Nagpur: On Sunday, when Prime Minister Modi came to Nagpur, the capital of a proposed Vidarbha state, he was shown a placard by VRAS activists at Ajni Chowk Nagpur demanding the establishment of an independent Vidarbha State. The decision had been taken in this concern way back in 1997 during the National Convention at Bhubaneswar. A delegation of Vidarbha Rajya Andolan Samiti had sought time to meet the PM and in this concern they had approached the District Commissioner. But due to his busy schedule, permission to meet him was denied.
Therefore, as the administrative officials denied permission to the delegation to meet the Premier the activists resorted to sloganeering as the PM’s convoy passed through the designated routes. They highlighted the prevailing issues of the region and demanded Vidarbha’s formation by displaying placards in front of PM’s convoy.
‘Palan Kijiye, Palan Kijiye, BJP Bhubaneswar session 1997 ka prastav palan kijiye’, ‘Modi saheb pruthak Vidarbha ka nirman Kijiye’, ‘Lathi goli khayenge, Vidarbha Rajya milayenge’, ‘Leke rahenge leke rahenge, Vidarbha Rajya leke rahenge’, ‘Modi Saheb Vidarbha ki Janta Ka Karo Vichar, ab nahin sahenge Maharashtra sarkar ka atyachar,’ ‘Vidarbha ki naari ne lalkara hai, Vidarbha Rajya hamara hai’, ‘Katenge magar hatenge nahin’, ‘Roti Apna Rajya Leke rahenge Vidarbha Rajya’, ‘Ye azadi jhoothi hai, Vidarbha Ki Janta bhookhi hai’, and other such slogans were raised.
The placards being shown too contained these slogans. Due to lack of irrigation facilities in our Vidarbha state, farmers are committing suicide in large numbers. Vidarbha produces 70% of Maharashtra’s electricity. Due to the cost of electricity compared to other regions, industries are running out of business due to which youths are fleeing in large numbers to other places in search of employment. Vidarbha has been literally recognised as a large old age home. Farmers have to contend with 12-12 hours of load shedding despite massive amounts of power being produced form here. 23 types of different minerals are available here despite no processing plants here.
2300 villages in Vidarbha have been deserted. Naxalism has increased in Gadchiroli, Chandrapur, Gondia district of Vidarbha due to unbalanced development and a situation has arisen where tribals are getting killed, so separate Vidarbha state is the only option and central government should form a Vidarbha state immediately by Modi sir. All the protestors were detained at Police Station Ajni till 1 pm till Modiji left Nagpur.
