Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) continued its crackdown on encroachments in the city on Monday, targeting Sitabuldi Main Road and the Mahal area. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Addl MC) Ajay Charthankar personally led the drive, which aims to address encroachments that reduce road width and contribute to traffic mishaps, a concern highlighted in a recent Road Safety Review meeting.
In the afternoon, the anti-encroachment squad, accompanied by police officers, arrived at Sitabuldi Main Road. The presence of law enforcement ensured that encroachers did not cause any disturbances. Licenses of vendors were checked by Addl MC Charthankar himself.
Upon the squad’s arrival, non-licensed hawkers quickly fled to avoid confiscation of their goods. NMC officials issued strict instructions to hawkers to stay behind the yellow line marked on the road. Stalls that extended beyond this line were pushed back to ensure the smooth movement of vehicles on the main road.
Following the operation on Sitabuldi Main Road, the anti-encroachment squad moved to Kelibagh Road in Mahal. Here, hawkers occupied nearly half of the concretized road, causing daily traffic snarls on this busy stretch.
The question remains: Who is at fault? Is it the hawkers struggling to make a living, or the authorities striving to maintain order and safety on the roads?
Nagpur Today spoke to all three parties involved: the NMC, hawkers, and shop owners. Check out what they have to say here.
