Nagpur: It is compulsory to conduct PhD. Course work Research Methodology for PhD completion in Nagpur University. However, the permitted till last year, course work under Indian Council of Social Science Research and Online course has been declared invalid from this session.

Instead of the same, the university has started a 10 day course work from the Academic College. Only the course works conducted from the college will be considered valid. A new syllabus compiled by the university itself has also been introduced for the same. A sum of Rs. 7000 has been declared as the fees of this course work. Around 50 students have, so far, applied for PhD. in the varsity.

Coursework is work performed by students or trainees for the purpose of learning. Coursework may be specified and assigned by teachers, or by learning guides in self-taught courses.

Nevertheless, in other districts, the prevailing course works are still valid. As a result, the PhD. aspirants are able to complete the course in lower fees from other colleges.

ICRR Course work is free of cost for the students and Online Course work had a fee as low as Rs. 2050. Similarly, correspondence course, which is closed now, had a fee of Rs. 3000. It is to be mentioned here that according to the UGC guidelines, a Standard Research Methodology Coursework is mandatory. Both the course works, ICRR and Online, declared void by the university are run by UGC itself. Thus, the query which poses up is on what grounds, they stand cancelled by Nagpur University.

Talking on the issue, PhD. candidates have informed that a sum of Rs. 7000 is being charged for coursework which, certainly, is not possible for every student. The need of the hour is either the validity of courses must be resumed or the fees of newly introduced course must be reduced. Students have also demanded that the course work must be in three languages viz. English, Hindi and Marathi instead of being only in English to ease the understanding for students who have a lose grip on English.

“We have approved the academic course on the direction of UGC. We have also decided to start our own course work which will be a better option”, said Dr. Pramod Yawle, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Nagpur University. “We cannot decrease the fees as we also have to pay to various professors who will be coming to give lectures”, he added.
