Washington/New Delhi -US President Donald Trump on Monday announced a reduction in reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods from 25 per cent to 18 per cent, shortly after confirming he had spoken with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The move signals a tentative thaw in India–US trade relations, which had been strained in recent months by steep duties on a range of products.
However, the relief is only partial. An additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian exports to the United States remains in force, meaning several key sectors will continue to face elevated trade barriers despite the rollback in reciprocal levies.
Officials on both sides indicated that further discussions are expected, as New Delhi seeks broader tariff relief while Washington continues to press for greater market access and trade concessions.
