Nagpur: The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court has taken suo motu cognisance of a serious safety issue after observing that trees, electric poles, and transformers are standing in the middle of newly built cement roads across the city. The court has treated the matter as a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), noting that such obstructions pose grave danger to commuters.
According to the court, several locations—including Manewada, Omkar Nagar, Medical Chowk, Khankhoje Nagar, Ayodhya Nagar, Sakkardara, and other parts of Nagpur—have cement roads where trees, poles or transformers sit directly in the carriageway. These obstacles are forcing motorists to make sudden swerves or sharp turns, significantly increasing the risk of major accidents.
The bench also remarked on the lack of coordination between the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), the electricity distribution company, and the Garden Department. Despite new road construction, neither the trees nor the power infrastructure has been shifted, leaving hazardous obstructions in place.

Court documents reveal that 33 cement roads are presently under construction in Nagpur. Over 100 km of roadwork has already been completed, and all cement road projects are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, with funding already allocated. However, the presence of unshifted trees, poles, and transformers on these stretches has raised serious concerns over project planning and execution.
Taking note of the potential threat to public safety, a division bench comprising Justice Anil Kilor and Justice Rajnish Vyas has initiated suo motu PIL proceedings. The court has appointed amicus curiae Advocate Ujjwal Deshpande and directed him to file a comprehensive petition within two weeks.
