New Delhi: The Indian government has imposed temporary restrictions on Telegram in the country ahead of the RE-NEET 2026 examination scheduled for June 21. The move comes following recommendations from the National Testing Agency (NTA) as authorities seek to prevent the spread of misinformation and fake paper leak claims related to the exam.
Under the order issued under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, access to Telegram in India will be restricted for a limited period, with the measures remaining in force until June 22, 2026.
In addition to restricting access to the platform, the government has directed Telegram to disable its message-editing feature for previously posted messages in India. The temporary suspension of the editing function will remain in effect until June 30, 2026.
Authorities said the decision was taken after several incidents in which edited messages were allegedly used to create misleading evidence of examination paper leaks after tests had already been conducted. Officials believe restricting the feature will help preserve the integrity of digital records during the examination period.
The government’s action highlights growing concerns over the misuse of messaging platforms during major national examinations. Telegram has frequently come under scrutiny in cases involving alleged paper leak networks, unauthorized study material distribution, and online fraud.
One of the key reasons Telegram is often linked to such incidents is its ability to support large groups and channels that can reach thousands of users simultaneously. The platform also offers automation tools and bots that can rapidly distribute content across multiple communities.
Another concern raised by authorities is the ease with which accounts can be created, including through virtual or temporary phone numbers in some regions. Combined with message-editing capabilities, these features can make it difficult to track the original source and timing of certain content.
The temporary restrictions are expected to be lifted after the RE-NEET examination period concludes, while authorities continue monitoring online platforms for activities that could impact the fairness and credibility of national-level examinations.
