Nagpur: Sudden weather changes and strong winds on Sunday night made it impossible for two Indigo Airlines flights to land at Nagpur Airport. Both aircraft were diverted to alternate destinations as a safety precaution.
According to airport sources, flight 6E-7543 from Hyderabad was diverted to Raipur, while flight 6E-486 from Bengaluru was rerouted to Bhopal.
Around 7 p.m., the skies over Nagpur turned cloudy, followed by a spell of heavy rain. The Hyderabad flight was preparing to land around 8:30 p.m., but the pilot decided to divert the aircraft after assessing that strong crosswinds could endanger the landing. Around the same time, the Bengaluru flight also faced unfavourable wind conditions and was redirected to Bhopal.
Airport officials explained that strong winds pose a major risk during landings. A tailwind — when wind blows from behind — can increase an aircraft’s speed, while a headwind — coming from the front — creates extra resistance. Both conditions make it difficult to maintain stability, often forcing pilots to take quick decisions. Sources said intense tailwinds over Nagpur made speed control difficult, prompting pilots to choose diversion despite good visibility.
Just last week, an Air India flight to Delhi had to return to Nagpur shortly after takeoff following a suspected bird strike. With Sunday’s diversions, it marks the second time in a short span that flight operations at Nagpur Airport were disrupted due to weather-related challenges.
Located at the geographical centre of India, Nagpur Airport serves as a critical hub for both passenger and cargo traffic. Its airspace is a convergence point for major domestic and international routes connecting Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. The airport’s strategic position gives it high operational importance within India’s aviation network.
Equipped with modern facilities, an extended runway, and advanced air traffic control systems, Nagpur Airport is considered among the safest in the country. Situated in the heart of the city — alongside the centrally located railway station — it offers seamless connectivity, reinforcing Nagpur’s role as not just Vidarbha’s, but one of India’s key transport centres.
