Dubai/Beirut: Iran’s state television has declared incumbent President Hassan Rouhani the winner of the country’s presidential election, giving him a second four-year term.

With nearly 40 million votes in Friday’s hard-fought poll counted so far, Rouhani was leading the race with 56.88 percent, the interior ministry said on Saturday.

Ebrahim Raisi., Rouhani closest rival, won 38.55 percent of the vote.

Mostafa Mirsalim, a conservative, got 1.13 percent, while reformist Mostafa Hashemitaba got 0.52 percent.

“I congratulate the great victory of the Iranian nation in creating a huge and memorable epic in the continuation of the path of ‘wisdom and hope’,” tweeted Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri, referring to the government’s slogan.
