Nagpur: Maharashtra Government, at the Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, has approved a revised cost of Rs 6,708 crore for Phase-II of Nagpur Metro to be executed by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL). The extension of Nagpur Metro is aimed to provide connectivity to adjoining townships on Western, Northern and Eastern ends of Nagpur City.

In the second phase, 43.80 km of new tracks will be laid to provide metro connectivity to Kanhan, Butibori and Transport Nagar at Kapsi on Bhandara Road. The meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde approved the revised budget that has zoomed-up due to delay in sanction. MMRCL is a joint venture between the Central Government and the State Government with each having 50 percent share in the project.

Earlier, the cost of the second phase was pegged at Rs 5,976 crore, but subsequent to delay in approval from Centre, the project cost rose slightly. Earlier, the Central Government had given green signal for the second phase of Nagpur Metro after its first phase was dedicated to citizens. The work on Phase-I started in 2014 and was completed with slight delay, one of the main reasons being outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, and it is spread over 40.02 km.

In the second phase, Route 1A will take off from MIHAN to MIDC ESR (Butibori) covering 18.65 km, the Route 2A from Automotive Square to Kanhan is 13 km long. Similarly, Route 3A will start from Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna, a span of 6.65 km and another route is Prajapati Nagar to Transport Nagar, a distance of 5.50 km. The deadline for completion of Phase-II of Nagpur Metro is set for 2026 and Maha Metro officials are aiming to start ground works from April onwards.

Post completion of Phase-II, Nagpur Metro would be in a position to cater to 10 lakh population as several satellite townships have come-up on the outskirts of Nagpur city. Daily travellers on long distances stand to benefit with metro connectivity. When completed, the total operational route length of Nagpur Metro project will be 82 kms. The Kanhan extension from Automotive Square would benefit hundreds of travellers who stay in Kamptee but report to work in Nagpur.

Kamptee has a substantial population and many of them travel daily to Nagpur for either business related work or for personal visit to relatives. Similarly, the Butibori connectivity will also be a boon for industrial workers who now travel in a risky condition due to heavy road traffic on highways. The region has the biggest industrial estates in Nagpur district and thousands of Nagpurians work in the estate. There are about 750 units in Butibori, which employ around 50,000 people. The Metro will provide a fast mode of commuting to their factories.
