Nagpur: The city has proved its mettle once again in State board results for class 12th, declared on Tuesday. There is bright likelihood that toppers for two streams in the state are from the city. Since the state board does not release an official merit list, rankings are calculated based on the information received from schools or even parents. Anand Jawade of Ambedkar College grabbed the pole position in science stream in the state with 98.15%, followed by a stellar 96.76% in commerce by Anjali Shah of Kamla Nehru Mahavidyalaya. LAD College’s Arts stream student Jui Sagdeo scored a solid 94.76% but missed out on the top position in the state by a mere 0.16% to a student from Pune.

Regardless, Nagpur created another record of producing the overall state topper for the fourth consecutive year. This extended the dream run has affirmed a belief long held by local academicians that Nagpur has emerged as a mecca for Std X and XII toppers.

Sanjay Charalwar, principal of Mohta Science College, said, “There is increased awareness among students and parents on the need for good education. For students, it’s about pushing themselves more to be relevant in this competitive world and for parents its about providing all support to their children to achieve it.”

Jaspal Singh, principal of Guru Nanak School and Junior College, said, “Schools have been putting a great deal of effort in implementing the latest teaching methodology and having multiple revision sessions. This is not something which has happened overnight, but is a result of years and years of hard work.” Uma Bhalerao, principal of MKH Sancheti Public School, said, “Schools focus on finishing the course properly and in time so that more time is available for revisions.”

The thirst for high scored has fostered an ecosystem of coaching institutes. Nisha Kothari, director of IIT-Home where Jawade studied, said, “It was sheer hard work that got him such a high score. Anand called me today saying he was surprised on being called the possible state topper.”

All state-level science toppers that Nagpur has produced have been associated with some or the other coaching institute. The multiple revisions and honing of paper solving skills at these coaching institutes gives students an edge in the board exams.
