Angry residents block road for four hours
Nagpur: A 30-year-old woman was killed and her young child injured in a horrific accident on the city’s Godhni Road after a speeding tipper truck rammed into their two-wheeler from behind. The deceased woman has been identified as Jyoti Pankaj Falke. All three people travelling on the two-wheeler fell onto the road after the impact. The tipper’s wheel ran over Jyoti’s head, killing her on the spot. Following the incident, angry residents staged a protest, bringing traffic on Godhni Road to a standstill for four hours.
The accident occurred at around 4.30 pm on Tuesday in front of Garवा Biryani Centre on Godhni Road, within the jurisdiction of Mankapur police station. Jyoti Falke was travelling on a two-wheeler with her husband and child when the speeding tipper struck their vehicle from behind. The child, who was injured in the accident, was immediately admitted to a hospital.
Residents in the area expressed strong anger after the incident. They alleged that potholes, frequent excavation work and encroachments along Godhni Road were contributing to accidents. Demanding immediate repairs to the road, removal of encroachments and strict action against reckless drivers, residents staged a road blockade.
Notably, a young woman was killed in an accident on the same road just 20 days ago. Residents expressed deep dissatisfaction that the administration had still not taken permanent measures.
Senior police officers reached the spot in view of the seriousness of the situation. A large police presence was deployed, including Additional Commissioner of Police Vinita Sahu, DCP Ramesh Dhumal, Traffic Deputy Commissioner of Police Aditya Mirkhelkar and Mankapur zone DCP Annapurna Singh. At around 8 pm, Municipal Corporation Chief Engineer Leena Upadhyay also visited the spot and directed that encroachments in the area be removed overnight.
The protest was called off after police and municipal officials held discussions with residents and assured them of measures. The road was subsequently reopened to traffic. Meanwhile, police traced and detained the tipper driver, who had fled after the accident. Mankapur police are conducting further investigations.
Residents have raised an angry question: “When will the administration wake up even after two people have been killed on the same road in 20 days? How many more innocent lives will be lost before the death trap on Godhni Road is removed?”
