Nagpur: Divisional Commissioner of Nagpur Vijayalakshmi Bidari directed officials to expedite the work for removing bottlenecks in smooth movement of traffic.
Chairing a meeting on Tuesday to review the progress of initiatives discussed earlier, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) informed about receipt of funds of Rs. 197.63 crore for eliminating traffic congestion. The funds would be used for synchronising the signal system and the Divisional Commissioner instructed officials to ensure that works are completed on a priority basis by the end of June. Senior officers attended the meet that discussed ways to end the problem of traffic and parking in the city and surrounding areas.
The meeting was held on Tuesday at Divisional Commissionerate. District Collector Dr Vipin Itankar, Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT ) Chairman Sanjay Meena, Additional Municipal Commissioner Anchal Goyal, Deputy Commissioner, Revenue, Pradeep Kulkarni, Deputy Commissioner, Traffic Control Branch, Shashikant Satav, Joint Director, Town Planning Department, S P Thul, Sub Divisional Revenue Officer Suresh Bagle, Regional Transport Officer Ravindra Bhuyar etc. were present at the meeting.
A committee has been constituted under the Chairmanship of the Divisional Commissioner as per the direction of the High Court to suggest measures regarding traffic in Nagpur city and surrounding areas. By radically changing the transport system in Nagpur city, priority has been given to create better transport facilities for the citizens and funds have been made available for road safety. Under this, the proposal of Rs 197.63 crore was sanctioned for synchronisation of traffic signals and work is expected to start from next June.
The city’s traffic department has been modernised and essential sophisticated tools have been provided to control the traffic. This includes deployment of ten towing vans, five additional interceptor vehicles. 23 special repair of accident prone places. Similarly, the meeting was informed that 23 spots have been identified n city and its surrounding areas that are prone to accidents and necessary measures are being taken to ensure that accidents do not occur in the future. At 15 accident prone places, speed breakers, zebra crossings, notice boards, signal systems, encroachment removal and divider repairs have been carried out by the NMC.
Bidari directed to immediately put up a pictorial information board about the previous accidents, loss of life and measures to be taken to prevent accidents at these places to prevent accidents. On-street parking facilities are being created by selecting 75 roads in the city to remove traffic obstruction caused by haphazardly parked vehicles.
Among them, parking facilities on 15 roads will be completed in the next 15 days in coordination with the police department. For this, the process of determining the notice board and parking space is underway. In the city, space has been designated for parking two-wheelers and four-wheelers in various areas.
Along with this, instructions were given to search for parking facilities and reserved space for vehicle parking at Badkas Chowk, Netaji Market, Mahatma Phule Bhaji Bazar etc.
Priority to road repair before monsoon
Nagpur Municipal Corporation has prioritised the work of filling potholes so that the road does not get waterlogged during monsoons. Till the end of December 2023, 634 potholes covering an area of 42 thousand 68 square meters have been filled. Along with this, measures should be taken to ensure that the branches of the trees on the roads are cut, and that they do not obstruct the power lines.
