Nagpur: Panic briefly gripped passengers aboard a Mumbai-bound train from Visakhapatnam on Tuesday evening after a snake was reportedly spotted inside the toilet of a moving coach, triggering a swift security and rescue response as the train neared Nagpur.
The unusual alert surfaced on February 24 when a passenger claimed to have seen a snake inside the washroom of the coach. Alarmed, the passenger immediately informed railway staff, who escalated the matter as the train was approaching Nagpur.
Within minutes, the message reached the Railway Protection Force (RPF) unit in Nagpur, which in turn contacted members of the Wildlife Welfare Society to prepare for an emergency inspection.
The rescue team rushed to Platform No. 6 at Nagpur Railway Station, positioning themselves for immediate action. As the train pulled in shortly thereafter, officials wasted no time and began a detailed inspection of the coach and the toilet compartment where the reptile had allegedly been sighted.
However, despite a meticulous search of the area, no snake was found inside the coach.
Railway authorities confirmed that the situation was handled promptly and professionally by the RPF and wildlife volunteers, ensuring that passenger safety was not compromised. Normal operations resumed soon after, though the mysterious “vanishing snake” left many travellers both relieved and puzzled.
While the scare turned out to be a false alarm, the incident highlighted the rapid coordination between railway security and wildlife rescuers in handling potential emergencies on moving trains.
