Nagpur: Ajni Police on Friday booked six interns of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Nagpur for ragging a junior, said a police official.

The accused students have been identified as Dr Om Vaidya, Dr Shivprasad Kute, Dr Shriganesh Nilwan, Dr Piyush Neharkar, Dr Sachin Bhosale and Dr Bhagat Shubham Mahajan.

The case was registered on the complaint of Dr Akhil Bhagwan Giradkar on behalf of GMCH administration. The interns are booked under Section 4 of Maharashtra Prohibition of Ragging Act and Sections 323, 504, 506, 143, 147 and 149 of Indian Penal Code.

It may be mentioned here that the doctors were barred from internship on Wednesday after they were found allegedly ragging a junior student. The interns were also asked to vacate the college hostel by the administration. The MBBS students were undergoing internships at the college. They ragged a first year MBBS student in April this year. A complaint about the ragging incident was lodged with the Central Anti-Ragging Committee by a student. Committee had immediately directed the GMC&H administration to initiate action against the students.

Dean of GMCH Dr Raj Gajbhiye issued orders suspending internship of the students and also directed them to vacate the college hostel. Reports claimed that the victim was allegedly mentally and physically tortured by the seniors. The incident occurred six months ago. However, a formal complaint was lodged recently.

New turn:
The ragging case in GMCH took a new turn as students living in the college hostel wrote a letter to the college administration stating that no one was ragging students there. The victim in the ragging case also told the college administration that he was never ragged by anyone, stated the letter. A total of 107 students living in the college Hostel No. 5 submitted a letter to the college administration in which they claimed that ragging never happened in the hostel. The students tried to showcase the unity of senior and junior students. The victim also reportedly met senior officials of the college and tried to convince them that he was never ragged by seniors, said reports.
