Nagpur: In a major crackdown on drug-impaired driving, the Sitabuldi Traffic Zone of the Nagpur City Traffic Police launched a special enforcement drive under “Operation U-Turn” on May 12, targeting motorists allegedly driving under the influence of narcotic substances.
Using advanced Drug Testing Analyzer machines, traffic officials conducted late-evening patrols and blockades at key junctions across the city. During the operation, three motorists were intercepted for rash and suspicious driving behaviour and subsequently tested positive for THC, the psychoactive component found in ganja.
According to police officials, the first case was registered as FIR No. 0274 after a 42-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was stopped near Kannamwar Chowk around 5.50 pm. Police said the accused was driving an Alpha three-wheeler in a dangerous manner, prompting officials to conduct a drug test.
In the second case, FIR No. 0275 was registered against a 23-year-old motorcyclist who was intercepted near Hiramal Dining Hall in Civil Lines at approximately 6.25 pm. The accused was allegedly riding a Hero Honda Glamour motorcycle recklessly before being subjected to testing.
The third FIR, numbered 0276, involved a 57-year-old auto-rickshaw driver who was detained near the Traffic Office in Civil Lines around 6.20 pm. Police stated that the accused also tested positive for THC during the operation.
All three accused have been booked under Section 27 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 for consumption of narcotic substances, Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 for driving under the influence of drugs, and relevant provisions under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita pertaining to registration of FIRs.
The operation was led by Police Inspector Arvind Puri and Assistant Police Inspector Vikram Shivlal Jadhav, with support from Police Constable Vinay Rathod. Senior Inspector Vitthalsing Rajput is supervising the ongoing investigation in all three cases.
Police officials stated that “Operation U-Turn” will be intensified across various parts of Nagpur in the coming days to curb substance abuse among motorists and improve road safety. Authorities also appealed to citizens not to drive under the influence of drugs or intoxicants, warning that such acts endanger both the driver and innocent commuters on the road.
