Nagpur: A surprise visit by Commissioner of Police Dr K Venkatesham created a flutter in Sitabuldi Police Station on Monday morning. The top cop sought information from In-Charge Police Inspector Satyavir Bandiwar regarding encroachment on footpaths by shopkeepers in Sitabuldi area. What transpired between the two officials was not known immediately but the Police Inspector suddenly got into action as soon as the Commissioner left the police station.

The Sitabuldi cops led by PI Bandiwar cracked down street vendors and haththelewallas and brought over 90 shopkeepers to police station. The erring shopkeepers were challaned and fined accordingly. The cops have also planned not to spare the erring autowallas and other passenger vehicles crowding in Sitabuldi area haphazardly. The autos and other vehicles ferrying commuters from Kamptee, Kanhan, Koradi, Mankapur, Dahegaon and other rural areas could face the music from coming Tuesday.

The sudden action by Sitabuldi police led by PI Satyavir Bandiwar turned the atmosphere “hot” as the challaned street vendors protested the “over enthusiasm” of the cops. It is learnt that many shopkeepers who never encroached footpaths were also taken to the police station and challaned. This led to discontent and manhandling of some police personnel at the hands of angry shopkeepers. The PI Bandiwar took rounds of Jhansi Rani Square, Panchsheel Square, Lokmat Square, Central Bazaar Road, Variety Square, Munje Square and at other places and huddled the erring street vendors to the police station.
