Shri Krishna’s life has been described in various religious scriptures, including ‘Dasam Granth’ written by Shri Guru Gobind Singhji, Tenth Guru of Sikhism. In the ‘Dasam Granth’, Shri Guru Gobind Singh has beautifully described the lives of 24 Avatars,of which Shri Krishna is the 21st Avatar. His life has been poetically illustrated in 11,092 ‘Chhanda’ by Guruji.

‘Pootna Vadh’ is an important episode from the life of Shri Krishna. When Kansa realised that his destroyer had taken birth in Gokul, he called on Bakka Daitya’s sister Pootna and asked her to kill all the children born recently in his kingdom. Obeying his orders, Pootna said, “I will apply a sweet, poisonous substance on my breasts. Any child, who feeds on them, will definitely die. If the child seems to be clever, I shall kill him and bring him to you. You rule over this kingdom without any fear.”

Pootna disguised herself as a beautiful lady and reached Gokul. When Yashoda asked Pootna the reason for her arrival, Pootna replied, “Oh Chaudhrani! Ihave heard that you have given birth to a boy recently. Give him on my lap. I shall feed him and because of my milk’s effect, he will rule over this kingdom.” Under the influence of her sweet words, Yashoda handed over the boy to Pootna. Along with milk, Shri Krishna also sucked out her blood, thereby killing Pootna.

Shri Guru Gobind Singh Maharaj states, Pootna had committed such a great sin that even hell would be scared to accommodate her. While dying, she said, “Oh Krishna!Oh Hari! Please spare me.” Uttering the name of ‘Hari’ during her last moments made her enter ‘Vaikunth’. When Nand returned to Gokul, he was shocked to find bad odour arising from Pootna’s body. People narrated the entire incident to him. Nand realised that whatever Vasudev had told him, was coming out to be true.

Guru Gobind Singh says, kind hearted Shri Krishna, in his childhood, killed Pootna and relieved the Earth of sinful acts. Lakhs of salutes to such a great soul on his ‘Shri Krishna Janmashtami’!

Kids, women, men and youth participated in the event in colourful traditional dresses. Large number of girls led the Shobhayatra with carrying Mangal Kalash before the main float of Shri Krishna.
