The NMC had earlier entrusted the Mayor’s post to a woman under reservation, followed by the appointment of a woman as Deputy Mayor. Building on this, an unprecedented decision was taken to hand over the leadership of the Standing Committee, the Transport Committee, and ten other key committees to women—marking a significant shift in the city’s political landscape and reinforcing the growing imprint of women-led administration.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has backed this move as a vote of confidence in women’s leadership abilities. Nagpur, often referred to as Sangh Bhoomi due to the presence of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh headquarters, holds distinct political importance at the state and national levels. In that context, the message of women-led governance emerging from Nagpur is expected to have wider resonance.
Reacting to the development, Mayor Neeta Thakre said the intent goes beyond symbolic representation. “Our policy is to give women real opportunities to demonstrate decision-making capability. Women’s leadership will bring greater sensitivity and transparency to civic administration,” she stated.
The move is being welcomed as a meaningful step toward women’s empowerment, with calls for other political parties to adopt a similarly positive approach. Expectations are high that under Shivani Dani-Vakhare’s leadership, the Standing Committee will take firm, forward-looking decisions to drive Nagpur’s development.
