New Delhi/Nagpur: Large diesel cars, mainly SUVs, can remain on Delhi’s roads, the Supreme Court has said, but owners will have to pay a green fine to compensate for polluting the city’s air.

Last year, the Supreme Court had temporarily banned the sale of large diesel cars in New Delhi, triggering strong appeals from manufacturers.

The Supreme Court today allowed registration of diesel vehicles of 2000 CC and above in Delhi-NCR on deposit of one per cent of ex-showroom price as green cess. One per cent green cess to be deposited before the Central Pollution Control Board which will open a separate account in a PSU bank, says SC.

The SC also keeps open for adjudication the Centre’s opposition that such charge cannot be levied by the court. The court says it will decide later whether green cess can be levied on diesel vehicles of below 2000cc engine capacity.
