Nagpur: The Railway Protection Force (RPF) seized more than 4 kg of ganja from an unclaimed bag aboard the Puri-Ahmedabad Express at Nagpur Railway Station, dealing a significant blow to narcotics trafficking. The contraband, weighing 4.150 kg, is valued at over Rs 2 lakh.

The operation was carried out by the Crime Intelligence Branch of the RPF under the Nagpur Division of Central Railway during routine surveillance and anti-crime checks at the station.

The Puri-Ahmedabad Express arrived at Platform No. 3 at around 3.30 pm, when RPF personnel noticed an unattended bag lying near the staircase of the foot overbridge. After making repeated efforts to trace its owner without success, the team called in narcotics detection sniffer dog ‘Prince’.

The trained canine indicated the presence of narcotic substances inside the bag. During the subsequent search, RPF officials recovered two khaki tape-wrapped packets containing 4.150 kg of ganja.

The contraband was seized and further legal proceedings have been initiated to identify those responsible for transporting the narcotics.

In another incident, continuing its crackdown on drug trafficking, the Nagpur Police Crime Branch’s Anti-Narcotics Cell arrested a 25-year-old man from the Kotwali police station limits and seized 1.145 kg of ganja along with a mobile phone. The total value of the seized property is estimated at Rs 43,650.

Acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Narcotics Cell conducted a raid between 10.30 pm on August 4 and 12.30 am on August 5 near the residence of Uttamchand Modi in Nagoba Galli No. 2, Chitar Oli, under Kotwali police station limits.

During the operation, police arrested Sheikh Zuber Sheikh Abid (25), a resident of Nagoba Galli No. 2, Chitar Oli, Mahal, and recovered 1.145 kg of ganja from his possession.

Police said efforts are underway to trace another accused who is absconding. Investigators revealed that the wanted suspect has multiple cases registered against him under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

A case has been registered under the relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is in progress to ascertain the source and intended destination of the seized narcotics.
