Built in 1817 in the aftermath of the legendary Battle of Sitabuldi, the fort stands as a silent sentinel of a decisive chapter in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, a battle that hastened the fall of the Maratha Empire but immortalised its fearless resistance against colonial domination. Strategically positioned atop twin hillocks, the fort has overlooked the city for over two centuries, bearing testimony to the courage, sacrifice and unwavering spirit of Indian warriors. Today, it serves as the headquarters of the Uttar Maharashtra and Gujarat Sub Area, playing a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s hinterlands.

The fort complex is a treasure trove of national heritage, housing centuries-old barracks, vintage cannons, war memorials and the historic cell where Mahatma Gandhi was once detained during the freedom movement. Offering breathtaking views of Zero Mile, Civil Lines, Freedom Park and Central Nagpur, Sitabuldi Fort stands not merely as a military installation, but as a powerful reminder of India’s long and relentless march towards freedom, unity and sovereignty.
