Close family member of former state Congress President Ranjit Deshmukh has rubbished the reports of him being in talks with Bahujan Samaj Party for contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Nagpur on BSP’s ticket. A news published in a daily claimed that BSP which is looking for prospective candidate from the city has been trying to get Deshmukh in its stride and accord him the candidature.

A close aide of Deshmukh had categorically denied any such move and termed the news as a ‘cooked’ story to benefit some political orientation. “This is just a rumour and deliberate attempt to set some political scores for someone,” the source fumed.

The clarification on behalf of Deshmukh made sense, especially when the issue of paid news publication has once again hit the headlines.

The news also informed that BSP’s Maharashtra in-charge Veer Singh and state unit president Vilas Garud were in the city to finalize the talks with Deshmukh. It also maintained that sources close to Deshmukh had confirmed the development and that BSP has moved forward to initiate discussion with him.

However, the clarification came immediately after the news was published. The source added, “Even he (Deshmukh) came to know about this through reading the news. So there is no substance in publishing such false news,” he added.

Deshmukh had in 2007 rebelled against the Congress and contested in the Ramtek by-election. He got around 80,000 votes which caused the debacle of Congress nominee Subodh Mohite, who had switched to the Congress from Shiv Sena. Sena’s Prakash Jadhav was victorious then.
