Nagpur: After days of sweltering heat and heatwave-like conditions, Nagpur and several parts of Vidarbha finally received much-needed relief as thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and widespread rainfall lashed the region on Monday. The sudden change in weather brought down temperatures significantly, ending an uncomfortable spell of hot and humid conditions that had gripped the area.

Nagpur recorded 24mm of rainfall till 8.30 pm on Monday. While the showers raised hopes of the long-awaited arrival of the southwest monsoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) clarified that the rainfall was not linked to monsoon advancement. According to meteorologists, the rain-bearing clouds developed due to local atmospheric instability and westerly troughing rather than the monsoon system.

IMD officials said it would take at least three more days before assessing any fresh progress of the southwest monsoon into Vidarbha. The monsoon, which is already delayed by nearly a week in the region, advanced marginally in Maharashtra on Monday and has currently reached up to Pune.

The intense weather activity also caused disruption across Nagpur. Strong winds uprooted at least five trees at various locations, including near Pandav College in New Nandanvan, Mangalmurti Chowk, Padole Hospital Chowk, Lodhipura and Airport Road near Airport Centre Point Hotel. Some of the fallen trees blocked roads and disrupted traffic movement for several hours.

Fire brigade teams rushed to the affected spots and removed the trees to restore normalcy. Officials confirmed that no injuries or casualties were reported in any of the incidents.

In one locality, a fallen tree damaged electricity lines, triggering a power outage and creating a hazardous situation due to live wires hanging over the road. Residents immediately cordoned off the area and halted the movement of vehicles and pedestrians to prevent accidents, resulting in temporary traffic congestion.

Following alerts from local residents, Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) personnel promptly reached the site and disconnected the power supply as a precautionary measure.

“We called MSEB and the tree-removal team as soon as we learnt about the situation. They responded immediately and helped secure the area. We are thankful for their quick action,” said a resident.

Authorities said efforts were underway to clear all debris and repair damaged power lines. Electricity supply in the affected areas is expected to be restored after safety checks are completed.

Despite the brief spell, the rainfall provided substantial respite from the oppressive weather. Before the showers arrived, the city’s maximum temperature had touched nearly 40 degrees Celsius. Several localities, however, reported power cuts lasting more than two hours due to weather-related disruptions.

Weather experts noted that Vidarbha continues to miss out on significant benefits from the low-pressure system and associated weather activity over the Bay of Bengal. The system has so far failed to draw the monsoon current deeper into eastern Maharashtra, prolonging hot and humid conditions across the region.

Some districts of Vidarbha continued to experience heatwave conditions on Monday despite isolated rainfall activity. The IMD has forecast the possibility of thunderstorms and rain over isolated pockets during the next few days, while temperatures are expected to remain relatively high until the monsoon makes further progress.
