Nagpur: Rahul Sharma proved in more than one way that he was the chip of the old block. He created magic on the trapezoid-shaped hammered string musical instrument, Santoor with its seventy-two strings. Like his father, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Rahul too proved that he is the master instrumentalist of the Santoor.

The adroit movements of his hands on the seventy two strings wove magic and kept the audience enamored.

Rahul Sharma was the first performer for the second day of Kalidas Samaroh which got underway from November 20, 2016.
Rahul Sharma was accompanied by another musical maestro on Tabla Pandit Ram Kumar Mishra. The way the santoor churned out music to the rhythm of the tabla beats kept the audience wanting more.

The maestros started with performance on Rag Yaman went on to Aalap. They went on to play Jod –Bandish in Rupak Taal, which was followed by a Bandish on Trital Drudh.

One could see people from all walks of life and from all age groups listen with rapt attention. For once the Jugalbandi between music created on Santoor by Rahul Sharma and beats on Indian classical instrument Tabla by Pandit Ram Kumar Mishra made the audience forget their mobile phones and the messages on Whatsapp or SMS. At the end of most renditions, many stood up to cheer the musical maestros creating soulful music on their musical instruments.

The second performer for the evening too was a reputed performer having a musical lineage i.e. Pandit Kumar Gandharva. Daughter of Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Kalaapini Komkalli kept the same tempo of the mood with her vocal rendition of Indian classical music. Kalapini Komkali, the torch-bearer of ‘Kumar-Gayaki’ proved in more ways than one that music is in her veins.

Daughter of well-known classical singer and Padma Vibhushan Awardee Late Pt. Kumar Gandharva and Vasundhara Komkali, Kalapini Komkali created magic with her vocal rendition. Surprisingly many youngsters seem to enjoy the musical rendition.
The Kalidas Samaroh painstakingly organized by the Divisional Commissioner of Nagpur Division Anoop Kumar (IAS) is a programme worth witnessing.
