Nagpur: With the upcoming Assembly election in Nagpur, the city police have intensified their efforts to ensure law and order by launching a series of preventive actions. Among these measures, 409 out of 2,124 registered firearm license holders have voluntarily surrendered their weapons following an appeal by the police after the Model Code of Conduct came into force. This move is part of the city police’s multi-faceted approach to maintain peace during the election period.
In a press briefing on Friday, Commissioner of Police (CP) Ravinder Singal outlined the various actions being taken in the pre-election anti-crime drives. Over the past three days, contraband substances, liquor, arms, weapons, and other dangerous materials worth more than Rs 6 lakh have been seized in these operations.
CP Singal highlighted the stern actions being taken against notorious criminals in the city. “We have invoked the stringent Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities (MPDA) Act against three dreaded goons, with more proposals in the pipeline. Additionally, our teams are working on applying the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) against criminal gangs involved in various illegal activities. A comprehensive blueprint for preventive actions is ready.”
Flanked by senior officials such as Joint CP Nisar Tamboli, Addl CP Sanjay Patil, and DCP (Special Branch) Shweta Khedkar, Singal emphasized that all Zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) have been instructed to ramp up anti-crime operations in their respective areas. These operations focus on rooting out anti-social elements, seizing illegal arms, and cracking down on activities such as gambling and liquor dens.
Additionally, CP Singal mentioned that the Crime Branch, led by DCP Rahul Maknikar, is concentrating on dismantling top criminal gangs. The department is preparing an area-wise list of known criminals to facilitate targeted actions under various legal provisions. “We are sending daily reports to the Election Commission on the status of law and order and actions taken against illegal activities,” said Singal.
Nagpur police are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a peaceful election environment, with an ongoing commitment to curbing illegal activities and enforcing preventive measures against known offenders.
