After initially expressing displeasure at former President Pranab Mukherjee attending a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh event in Nagpur, the Congress today said Mukherjee ‘showed the mirror’ to the RSS through his speech.

However, the party steered clear of discussing the former President calling Sangh founder K B Hedgewar a ‘great son of mother India’.

“Dr Mukherjee’s visit to the RSS headquarters had led to a wide range of discussions and concerns. Today, Pranab Mukherjee has shown the mirror to RSS at their headquarters. He talked of plurality, tolerance and multiculturalism,” Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said.

“Shri Pranab Mukherjee has reminded the RSS of the history of India. He taught the RSS that India’s beauty lies in its tolerance for difference ideas, religions and languages. Is RSS ready to listen?” Surjewala said.

On the question of Mukherjee hailing KB Hedgewar as ‘great son of Mother India’, Surjewala said, “As a guest what Pranab Mukherjee ji said should be discussed and highlighted, not unwarranted formalities.”
