Nagpur: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday announced major amendments to the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) during his visit to Nagpur for the inauguration of the Agro Vision expo.

Speaking to reporters, Chouhan said the revamped crop insurance scheme will now also compensate farmers for losses caused by wild animal attacks and damage due to excessive rainfall, flooding, or waterlogging. He noted that farmers’ organisations and several state governments had long demanded these additions to the insurance coverage.

“From now on, if wild animals destroy crops, farmers will receive compensation. Similarly, if crops are damaged due to waterlogging or flooding caused by heavy rain, that too will be covered under PMFBY,” Chouhan said.

The Union Minister added that he was in Nagpur to participate in the Agro Vision programme, which aims to promote modern agricultural practices. He emphasised that technology has become essential for the future of farming.

“Whether it is artificial intelligence, machine learning, or robotics, technology is now crucial in agriculture. Farmers are being trained to use these tools, and work is underway to build a strong digital agriculture infrastructure,” he said.

Agro Vision, one of Central India’s leading agri-expos, brings together farmers, agri-startups, researchers, and companies to showcase innovations and emerging trends in modern agriculture.
