Nagpur: Hundreds of passengers faced severe inconvenience at Ajni railway station on Thursday after the Gondia–Mumbai Vidarbha Express was delayed by nearly an hour due to ongoing railway infrastructure work on the Gondia-Nagpur route.
According to railway officials, the Gondia-Nagpur section remains affected because of development and maintenance work being carried out between May 3 and May 23. As a result, the Vidarbha Express is currently originating from Nagpur instead of Gondia and is scheduled to depart at around 5 pm daily.
However, on Thursday, the train failed to arrive on time, leaving passengers stranded at Ajni station. The situation worsened after heavy rain lashed the city during the evening hours.
Passengers, including women, senior citizens, and children, were seen drenched as redevelopment work at Ajni station has led to the removal of several platform sheds and covered areas. With limited shelter available, many travelers crowded near the ticket counter area and staircases to escape the rain while waiting for updates on the delayed train.
Several passengers expressed anger over the lack of timely communication from railway authorities. Travelers said they were not informed properly about the delay and had to wait in difficult weather conditions without adequate facilities.
Commuters have now demanded temporary sheds and better passenger arrangements at Ajni station, especially ahead of the monsoon season, to avoid such hardships during ongoing infrastructure work.
