
Nagpur: Pardi police busted an alleged liquor smuggling attempt ahead of the Gandhi Jayanti dry day after intercepting a Maruti Baleno on the Bhandara highway and recovering a large consignment of liquor from the vehicle.
The police arrested Akhilesh Jaiswal in connection with the seizure and confiscated liquor and the car, with the total value of the seized property estimated at Rs 7,55,460.
According to police, they had received information about the illegal transportation of liquor and subsequently set up a checkpoint outside Suruchi Company on the Bhandara Highway.
During the vehicle-checking operation, the police stopped a Maruti Baleno travelling from Nagpur towards Bhugaon. A search of the vehicle allegedly led to the discovery of liquor bottles of different brands.
Jaiswal was taken into custody at the spot, police said.
Investigators are now trying to establish the source of the liquor and determine where the consignment was allegedly being taken for delivery. Police are also probing whether others were involved in the alleged smuggling operation.
The action was carried out on the instructions of senior police officers under the guidance of Senior Police Inspector Nanda Mangate.
Pardi police are conducting further investigation into the case.
