Nagpur: A major mishap was narrowly avoided at Nagpur Railway Station around 3 pm on Wednesday when smoke and flames were spotted from an AC coach of a train stationed on the pit line between Platform No. 7 and the yard. Swift and coordinated action by alert railway staff prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining coaches.
According to officials, smoke was first noticed from the rear end of the B2 coach (No. CR-131343) of an ICF rake. Within moments, thick smoke billowed out, followed by visible flames. On-duty railway employees immediately rushed to the spot and began firefighting using extinguishers. When the flames persisted, the staff broke the coach windows and deployed electric fire extinguishers and water jets to douse the blaze.
Thanks to their prompt response, the fire was contained before it could spread further. The rest of the rake remained unharmed, and no casualties were reported. The incident caused brief panic and minor operational disruption at the station.
Officials said that had there been even a slight delay in firefighting efforts, the fire could have engulfed nearby coaches as the interior materials were highly flammable. After the situation was brought under control, the affected rake was removed from the pit line, and the damaged coach was detached for inspection and repairs.
A senior railway official praised the alertness of the on-duty staff, stating that their “quick thinking and immediate action averted what could have been a serious disaster.”
