After persistent protests led by Prahar Sanghatana chief and MLA Bacchu Kadu, the Maharashtra government has finally taken a major step toward farmer loan waiver. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the formation of a nine-member high-powered committee to formulate a comprehensive plan for farmer debt relief.

The committee will be headed by Praveen Pardeshi, Chief Economic Advisor to the Chief Minister. It has been directed to submit its report within six months, outlining both short-term and long-term recommendations to ensure effective and sustainable loan relief for farmers.

Based on the committee’s report, the government will make its final policy decision regarding loan waiver and debt restructuring.

CM Fadnavis’ Statement

“The committee will decide the criteria for loan waiver and ensure that farmers do not fall back into debt,” said CM Fadnavis. “We have asked for the report to be submitted by the first week of April, and the final decision on farmer loan waiver will be taken before June 30, 2026.”

Fadnavis emphasized that the government remains committed to fulfilling its promises. “We had assured that funds will directly reach farmers’ accounts — and that’s already happening. As of now, approximately 8.5 crore transactions have been made into farmers’ accounts. Ensuring that money reaches them promptly remains our top priority,” he added.

This marks a significant political and administrative victory for Bacchu Kadu’s movement, which had been pressuring the state to deliver on the long-pending demand for comprehensive farmer debt relief.
