Nagpur: Serious allegations have surfaced against several budget hotels operating under the OYO brand in Nagpur, with claims that many have turned into hubs of prostitution and other illegal activities, operating in blatant violation of government norms.
According to sources and local residents, a growing number of such establishments are being misused for immoral activities and as safe havens for criminal elements, raising serious concerns over law and order in residential areas.
Crime Branch busts sex rackets
In a recent action, the Social Security Branch (SSB) of the Crime Branch raided an OYO Hotel named ‘MH 40’ in Wanadongri under MIDC police limits, exposing an alleged prostitution racket. During the raid, three women were rescued, including two from Ludhiana in Punjab and one from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.
Earlier, a similar raid was conducted at ‘OYO Green Guest House’ on Besa Road under Hudkeshwar police limits, where a youth, along with his father, was allegedly running a sex racket under the guise of a hotel. Police rescued two women and arrested the accused duo.
Officials say such cases have surfaced repeatedly, indicating a troubling pattern.
Safe havens for criminals?
Residents allege that some of these hotels are increasingly being used for drug abuse, hookah parties and sheltering wanted criminals.
In one such case under Wathoda police limits, the Crime Branch’s vehicle theft squad apprehended a notorious vehicle thief, Rishabh Asopa, who was reportedly hiding in an OYO hotel with his girlfriend to evade police action.
Residents raise red flag
Locals have expressed growing unease over the frequent movement of young couples in these hotels, especially in residential areas. Many allege that students often skip college to visit such establishments, leading to social discomfort and rising tensions in neighbourhoods.
Despite repeated complaints, residents claim that authorities have failed to take decisive action.
Blatant violation of rules alleged
As per government ‘Lodging and Boarding’ regulations, hotels can operate only in designated commercial zones and must comply with multiple mandatory conditions, including:
• Approved commercial land use
• Sanctioned building plans
• Fire safety clearance
• Adequate parking facilities
• Commercial electricity and water connections
• Valid ownership records
Overall, around 10–11 mandatory permissions are required before commencing operations.
However, allegations suggest that many such hotels across Nagpur are flouting these norms with impunity, continuing operations without proper clearances.
Call for strict action
Citizens have now demanded a comprehensive audit of all OYO and similar hotels operating in residential areas, urging authorities to verify their legality and take strict action against violators, including hotel operators, managers and property owners.
With repeated raids exposing illegal activities, pressure is mounting on the administration to act decisively to safeguard the city’s social fabric and maintain law and order.
