Nagpur: After HSC results in Maharashtra, 6,24,363 students in the State were declared pass from Science Stream. Almost 6,23,890 cleared MHT CET. Of the 6 lakh plus candidates, around 4 lakh have opted for engineering admissions. It means that many candidates will compete for 1.20 lakh seats of engineering in Maharashtra, according to a report in a local English daily.

According to experts, it will pose a problem during engineering admissions as there will be too many students for less number of seats. This year, in CET, 7,44,926 students registered for MHT CET of whom 1,22,036 have not filled the applications while 6,23,890 confirmed their participation in MHT CET. This is a good position for engineering colleges. But, according to experts, the number of aspirants in CET may be more, those who actually show interest for state engineering seats are less.

The reason is: There are a few colleges which maintain quality. Last year, Maharashtra had witnessed vacancy of 46% seats in First year Bachelor of Engineering (BE). After taking several measures by the State Government, the vacancy in engineering courses is not going down. Over the period of years, lot of engineering seats are going vacant.

Government has taken so-called measures but those have not yielded any result. It had constituted a committee that had suggested certain steps, still the vacancy position has not improved. Basically students are opting for colleges which have enhanced their quality, which have good placement results. Unfortunately most engineering colleges are suffering financial crunch as the State Government has not released the amount to be disbursed to the colleges against various scholarships. With increasing financial burden most colleges have failed to maintain the quality. But this year even top colleges too had to wait for all seats to be filled.

Diploma Engineering admission process in Maharashtra begins:

The admission process of post-SSC Diploma Engineering courses in Maharashtra commenced on Thursday. To make the admission process hassle-free, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil launched the Admission Web Portal. Principal Secretary Vikas Chandra Rastogi, Director of Technical Education Dr Vinod Mohitkar were present on the occasion.

The web portal https://dte.maharashtra.gov.in has been developed by the Technical Education Department. The total number of enrolled students for degree courses was 41 percent in the academic year 2018-19; 50 percent in 2019-20; 60 percent in 2020- 21, and 70 percent in 2021-22. While the number of students admitted in 2022-23 increased to 85 percent. The average percentage of all admitted students in government technical colleges was 97 per cent.

A total of 375 institutes for the academic year 2023-24 have an admission capacity of nearly 1 lakh. The concept of e-scrutiny will be implemented by the Directorate of Technical Education in addition to the physical scrutiny process of the documents. There are 328 Facilitation Centers set up in the State by the Directorate of Technical Education for the convenience of students for first year post 10th year and direct second year engineering degree admissions.

The centres are expected to help students in filling up the admission application form, counsel them, support them at various stages of the admission process and the list will be given on the computerised system of admission. A Nodal Officer has been appointed in each district to deal with the problems arising at the facility centres. Their mobile numbers have been made available on the website. If the facility centers / institutes need any information regarding the admission process or face any problem, it will be resolved by the nodal officer.

As State Board results of SSC are still not declared, the initial part of the admission process like registering, verifying the application form, selecting the method of scrutiny, raising objections, and filling the option form started from Thursday. Videos of this important phase will be made available on the website. Along with this, a presentation giving brief information about the graduation admission process, branch wise information films will also be made available to the students.
