Nagpur: Although the resident doctors called off their strike in Nagpur on Thursday night, the day was marked by unique protests at Mayo Hospital. In a symbolic gesture, resident doctors conducted OPDs (Outpatient Departments) in the open within the hospital premises, responding to the recent crime against a doctor in Kolkata, a report in a local daily said.
According to Dr. Bal Gangadhar, President of the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) at Mayo, the rationale behind the protest was to highlight how unsafe hospitals in India have become. The crime in Kolkata was committed as if the doctor was on the road. So, they decided to conduct our OPDs by the roadside.
Over 100 doctors participated in the protest, treating around 150 patients across various specialties, including medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, and paediatrics. The resident doctors held four OPDs on the roadside, drawing attention to the issue of safety in healthcare.
Meanwhile, nurses who had joined the strike on Wednesday continued to work on Thursday while wearing black armbands. They had initially planned to stop work for one hour daily starting August 25. However, with the strike now called off, this protest has become unnecessary.
Earlier in the day, the Director of AIIMS Nagpur, Dr. Vikas Mahatme, and Executive Director Dr. Prashant Joshi met with the striking doctors. Following this, resident doctors at AIIMS Nagpur also called off their strike on Thursday night, complying with a plea made by the Chief Justice of India.
In addition, the residents at AIIMS Nagpur have requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the institution to permit the formation of a Resident Doctors’ Association, as AIIMS Nagpur has not had such an association previously.
