Only Robust Science can save life on Earth, says Padmabhushan Prof Joshi at CSIR-NEERI lecture

Nagpur News: The CSIR-NEERI 56th Foundation Day lecture on ‘Science, Technology, and our common concern for the Environment’ heard words of concern from Padmabhushan Prof S.K. Joshi who earnestly stressed upon the need for Robust Science to save life on the Earth. “The environment is degrading and the very existence of mankind is at stake. Will the Earth be life sustaining?” questioned Prof Joshi and himself answered that NEERI is working in the area which is so crucial for the country. Prof Joshi was speaking as the chief guest of the programme.

Expressing concern over global warming, damage to the ozone layer, annihilation of forests and depleting natural resources, Prof Joshi said, “40 percent of the population today is still dependent on biomass and fossil fuel. Indoor pollution (air pollution)  poses a major threat to the country in the form of  many diseases,” and added  “We should not lose hope as institutions like NEERI are working on better Science & Technology to attain good environment.”

Addressing  the gathering  of the employees of NEERI, Joshi asked them to do Robust Science which is the need of the environmental services. “You can only improve if you understand science and innovation.You and your works touch everyone in either way so focus on major areas and innovate. The greatest advantage of NEERI lab is that it is the lab consisting the youngest talent.”

Prof Joshi also hailed the past employees of NEERI for their hard work in making NEERI what it is today. He appreciated the achievements of NEERI and its vision to attain leadership position in India and someday in the world also.

Earlier in the day, various programmes were organized by CSIR-NEERI to mark its Foundation Day.  Students from various schools and colleges exhibited innovative science models in the area of environmental science and engineering in the Science Model Exhibition-cum-Competition organized on the occasion.

NEERI audio-visual was also screened in the NEERI Auditorium. Dr. Satish R Wate, Director, CSIR-NEERI said that CSIR-NEERI celebrates its foundation day every year to revisit the past achievements and to reinvent the R&D glories looking at future.
