OCW-NMC replaces 256 km pipeline in 22 command areas in 14 months

Uninterrupted water supply project begins in Lakadganj-II ESR area

Nagpur News : The Orange City Water (OCW)-NMC’s uninterrupted water supply project (replacement of pipelines) is going on in full swing in almost 22 command areas across city and in last 14 months (Since July 17, 2012 to Nov 19, 2013) OCW-NMC have successfully replaced almost 256 km pipeline across city.

Along with actual rehabilitation work of the uninterrupted (24×7) water supply project, OCW is also replacing very old network, rusted pipelines that were supplying contaminated water in many parts of city under ‘Priority Works.’ About 23 km pipeline has also been successfully replaced under priority works so far.

On November 19, OCW-NMC added 23’rd command area of Lakadganj in its rehabilitation work. In Lakadganj ESR command area; NMC-OCW is replacing almost 25 km old water supply network pipeline using HDPE (High Density Poly Ethylene) pipes and will provide house service connections (HSC’s) at  every consumers door-step using MDPE (Medium Density Poly Ethylene) pipes.

The ground breaking (Bhoomipujan) programme held at the hands of MLA from East and Central Nagpur,  Krishna Khopde and  Vikas Kumbhare, NMC Water supply committee chairman  Sudhakar Kohale and corporators  Narendra (Balya ) Borkar, Ms Sangita Kalamkar.

It may be mentioned here, after addition of Lakadganj ESR-II , a new command area, now changing of pipelines activity under ambitious uninterrupted water supply project is going on in full swing in almost 22 command areas including Nandanvan, Reshimbagh, Nandanvan proposed, Shantinagar, Binaki, Deshpande Layout, Bazonbagh, Wanjari Nagar, Boriyapura Feeder, Boriyapura ESR, Sitabuldi Fort-1, Dhantoli, Killa Mahal, Bastarwadi, Bastarwari proposed ESR- I, Sakkardara, Indora ESR-I, Lakadganj, Sakkardara proposed, Sitabuldi-GH area and Laxminagar command area.
Further it may be mentioned here, OCW in a bid to avoid road cuttings and digging of internal lanes has also planned to use (HDD machines) trenchless technology for lying of HDPE pipeline.

OCW has started utilising such technology to minimise traffic disruptions and chances of disturbing existing utilities. Till now almost 75 km pipeline has been laid across many command areas to reduce the danger for community.
At Lakadganj ESR command area NMC-OCW has also set up a ‘Water House’ for the consumers of area to address to their complaints about works related issues like digging of roads, restoration etc.

In these command areas OCW has also initiated an unique social initiative of holding ‘Mohalla Sabha’ and creating ‘Water Friends’ through its social welfare co-ordinator team (SWT).

Till date OCW has organised over 12,500 Mohalla meetings (Mohalla Sabha/Group meetings in an objective to create a co-operative atmosphere on the field by providing sufficient and adequate information regarding rehabilitation project to the citizens and also solve their queries on the spot.

On the similar lines of Mohalla sabhas, citizens in many command areas were also made ‘Water Friends’. These Water

Friends are working as the ambassadors of NMC-OCW to receive complaints, informing people about legal and illegal meter connections and even guide an educate people about the benefits of on-going uninterrupted water supply project in city.
