Nagpur: The Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) has written to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) requesting that the civic body take responsibility for providing basic amenities in layouts regularised under the Gunthewari scheme. However, the NMC has not yet accepted this request.
According to officials, the NMC plans to write back to NIT, seeking approved layout plans and ownership documents for open plots before taking any further steps.
The NIT had earlier asked NMC to assume responsibility for providing infrastructure facilities in 407 layouts located in the city’s outer areas. Despite this communication, no concrete action has been taken so far.
Recently, Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule held a meeting with NMC and NIT officials, along with local representatives, directing that NIT should develop the basic infrastructure in these areas. Following this, the NMC initiated its own process by seeking detailed documents from NIT regarding layouts regularised in a manner similar to Gunthewari plots.
Initially, the NMC has requested information related to 65 layouts, including documents on ownership of open plots, to facilitate further proceedings.
The issue highlights ongoing coordination challenges between NIT and NMC over who should bear the long-term responsibility for civic amenities in newly regularised layouts around Nagpur’s periphery.
