NMC warns of stern action against sale, use of banned nylon manja

Nagpur: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has warned of stringent action against sale and use of banned nylon manja. The civic body has stated, sale, stocking of nylon manja is banned. Anyone found selling or even handling the same is bound to face the music if caught by the members of Nuisance Detection Squad (NDS).

Acting as per the orders of Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court, the Department of Environment, Maharashtra, issued a notification about ban on public usage of nylon thread. The thread is used in kite flying but its usage has resulted in life threatening injuries to many. Nylon manja is used to fly kites during the Makar Sankranti festival. But this thread poses great threat to humans, birds and other living beings.

The possibility of loss of life due to use of nylon manja in kite-flying cannot be ruled out. Therefore, Deputy Municipal Commissioner and Director of Solid Waste Management Department Dr Gajendra Mahalle has appealed to citizens not to use banned nylon manja. In case anyone is found stocking or selling the banned nylon thread (manja) then action would be taken by the NMC against them, he warned. Dr Mahalle has also appealed to citizens to pass on information about the ban on sale or use of nylon manja so that pre-emptive action can be taken before any harm is done.

Help curb the menace

To curb use of the banned nylon manja during kite-flying, the civic body has appealed to the citizens to share information about sale and use of the manja. Citizens can share information with NMC’s WhatsApp number 8600004746 as well as on Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s official Facebook page @nmcngp on Instagram and @ngpnmc on X, said Dy Municipal Commissioner and Director of Solid Waste Management Department Dr Gajendra Mahalle.
