Nagpur: In a creative step to tackle the city’s persistent garbage dumping problem, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has decided to transform notorious black spots into aesthetically appealing spaces. The initiative, part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, aims to improve the city’s cleanliness and visual appeal while discouraging citizens from dumping waste in public areas.
According to officials from the Solid Waste Management Department (SWM), around 50 such black spots have been identified across the city’s 10 administrative zones. Each zone has been instructed to take up beautification of at least five of the worst-affected sites in the first phase.
The idea was proposed by Additional Municipal Commissioner Vasumana Pant, who emphasized that beautifying these dumping-prone sites would not only uplift Nagpur’s image but also ease the burden on sanitation workers. “Once these locations are beautified, it will change citizens’ perception and discourage littering,” she said.
Pant has directed SWM officials to conduct a thorough survey of the identified black spots to understand why these areas attract garbage dumping. If the issue stems from gaps in door-to-door collection, the civic body plans to make systematic corrections.
The Cleanliness Inspectors of each zone have been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the beautification plan. They have also been instructed to ensure that once the makeover is complete, the sites are regularly monitored and maintained.
The NMC has set a deadline of November 15 to complete beautification of all 50 identified locations. Officials have also been told to counsel citizens found dumping waste in open areas and to maintain strict vigilance to prevent recurrence.
If successful, the project could serve as a model for sustainable cleanliness management, combining aesthetics, awareness, and accountability to make Nagpur cleaner and greener.
